What's Going on with Your Swollen Jaw?

Posted on 5/20/2016 by Jeffery Gerhardt
A woman suffering from a swollen jaw.Does your jaw suddenly look larger than normal, or have you noticed a lump on it that you've never seen before? If so, and you're not sure of the cause, you may need to contact your dentist for an evaluation. Find out more about what could be going on with your jaw.

What Causes Swelling of the Jaw?

There are a lot of different factors that can cause your jaw to swell. If you suffer any type of facial trauma, the tissues may swell and become tender, and underlying issues like a tooth abscess or cavity could also cause swelling.

Skin infections, growths, excess oil accumulation, and other dermatological issues may be at play, and if the lymph nodes become enlarged, you might also experience jaw swelling. In rare cases, cancer or other serious disease may be the cause of your swelling.

How Is Jaw Swelling Treated?

The treatment used on your swollen jaw will depend on the cause and severity of the problem. If the swelling is mild and you believe it is the result of a recent injury or surgical procedure, it will likely heal on its own with cold compresses, anti-inflammatories, and pain-medication.

If your swollen jaw is accompanied by tooth sensitivity, pain when chewing, and bad breath, a tooth problem like an abscess is likely the cause. Treatment will require a trip to the dentist for antibiotics, and your dentist will also recommend a home care regimen to help prevent the infection from returning.

If your swollen jaw occurred as a result of a blow to the face and the jaw has been broken or dislocated, you need the jaw immobilized and may also require surgery depending on the severity of the problem.
