Teeth In A Day in Cedar Park, TX

When you are faced with tooth loss, your life is severely affected. The more teeth you are missing, the harder it is to speak. Eating your favorite foods becomes a chore, if not impossible all together. The traditional solution to tooth loss is to fit you with dentures. However, now you have the option of receiving dental implants. At Advanced Family Dentistry and Braces, we provide you with a safe and comfortable environment and our oral surgeon is highly experienced with this permanent solution to tooth loss. If you have lost your teeth, or have teeth that are no longer functional, consider getting teeth in a day.

What are teeth in a day?

Teeth in a Day, or All on 4®, are dental implants that replace a full bridge of missing teeth. They are a permanent alternative to dentures. A full bridge of false teeth is supported by four posts that are implanted into your jawbone, rather than, as dentures are, supported by your gums. Each bridge has four implants, so if both upper and lower teeth are being replaced, you will have a total of eight implants. The name "Teeth in Day" was given to this procedure because you can leave the office with a full set of functional teeth (although while you heal you are actually given a set of temporary bridges).

There are a multitude of advantages of dental implants:

•  They look just like natural teeth.
•  They are permanent. This also makes them more convenient. You do nott need to remove them every night to clean them.
•  They protect the health of your jaw. When you lose your teeth, the bone surrounding where the roots used to be begins to deteriorate. This can decrease the strength and alter the shape of your jaw. The implants act similarly to a tooth root and have been proven to slow and even stop deterioration.
•  You will feel more confident. Dentures can shift around during the day or even fall out. They may even cause trouble while talking or eating. With implants, there is no worry that your teeth will go anywhere.

Are you a candidate?

While dental implants are an excellent solution, there are some things to consider to determine if they are the right solution for you.

•  You are missing a full bridge or teeth or have no good teeth remaining.
•  Your jaw still has a sufficient amount of bone density.
•  Your gum tissues are healthy.
•  Your overall oral health is good.

The Implant Process

During your initial exam, the dentist will examine your entire mouth and take X-rays to look at the condition of your jawbone. If you are recommended for implants, you will schedule an appointment with the oral surgeon.

On the day of your surgery, you will receive a local anesthetic. If you have any teeth remaining, they will be removed. The surgeon will then drill holes into your jaw and place the implants. Afterward, he will take impressions that will be sent to a lab in order to create your permanent set of teeth. In the mean time, while you heal, you will be sent home with a temporary prosthesis.

Healing can take several weeks. The first couple of days at home, it is recommended that you consume a liquid diet. After that, you can move on to eating soft foods. You should avoid foods that could irritate your gums, such as things that are hard or crunchy.

During this time, you will also have several visits with the dentist to ensure that you are healing properly and the implants are fusing with your jaw correctly. It is also important to make sure that you are keeping your mouth clean. This includes brushing your temporary prosthesis to rid it of plaque and leftover food. Bacteria can still collect here and potentially get into your gums, causing an infection. Be sure to take prescribed pain medication as needed and also complete any antibiotics you are given to prevent infections from occurring.

Once you are healed, you will make a final trip to the office to have your permanent prosthesis placed. It will be screwed in, and cannot be removed except by your dentist. Care for your new teeth as you would natural teeth. Brush them at least twice a day. Floss and use mouthwash. Also, be sure to visit the dentist at least twice a year for regular exams and cleanings. Gum disease can still happen with false teeth. Your implants will also be examined for issues and if maintenance is needed, your teeth can be removed and then replaced when done.
