10 May A Parent’s Guide to Oral Surgery
If you’ve been told that your child is in need of oral surgery, you’ve likely got some concerns about the procedure.
No one wants to see their child have to go through surgery, even though oral surgery is quite safe. Here are a few things that you’ll want to know beforehand.
ABOUT ANESTHESIA
During your child’s oral surgery procedure, he will be asleep for the entire treatment. We all want your child to be comfortable throughout, so the use of anesthesia is imperative.
Not only will they not feel any pain, they also won’t have any memory of the procedure. However, since your child will be put under, it is crucial that you follow your oral surgeon’s recommendations regarding what your child should or should not eat prior to surgery.
AFTER THE SURGERY
Once your child’s procedure has been completed, he’ll be taken to recovery. It will take some time for the anesthesia to wear off and for him to wake up, but during this time, your oral surgeon’s staff will monitor him to make sure that the recovery is going as expected. Once he wakes up, he can finish his recovery at home.
CARING FOR YOUR CHILD AFTER ORAL SURGERY
Following oral surgery, your child should prepare to camp out on the couch with some movies and blankets. Make sure that you have plenty of pain relievers and a cold compress to help with swelling and discomfort.
The compress can be applied to the face for 15 minute increments. The following day, he should feel much better, but his activities should still be restricted and should probably still stay home to relax and recuperate.
