Calling Your Oral Surgeon Should Happen Right After an Auto Accident

When you are involved in an auto accident, one of the first calls once you figure out that your body is alright, is to your oral surgeon. This may not sound like a typical call to make, but it is for your own good.

During an auto accident, especially one that you can see coming at you, people tend to tense up. This causes them to brace themselves prior to impact. This can cause the bones in the body to break when another vehicle hits yours, including the jaw bone.

WHAT YOUR ORAL SURGEON IS GOING TO BE LOOKING FOR

Your oral surgeon is going to want to look at your jaw following the auto accident. Even if you aren’t in much pain, that doesn’t mean you didn’t do any damage to your mouth. They will want to look at an x-ray of your jaw to make sure there are no cracks, fractures, or full-on breaks.

Plus, they will want to do the same for your teeth. Each tooth is going to need to be examined to make sure that when they connected during the impact of the accident, they did not sustain any injuries. This typically does not take very long, but it is important to make sure that a few days from now, you aren’t all of a sudden in large amounts of pain.

Getting into an auto accident usually only hurts the larger parts of your body. However, that doesn’t mean you should discount the potential problems an accident could do to your teeth.

Even if your teeth don’t hurt, you should still see an oral surgeon. If you were recently in an auto accident of any kind, come in and see us. If you have any questions or would like to schedule an appointment, please call us at (512) 643-6060 today.
